FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New 2020 Scholarship Opportunity Announced
Our veterans' shelter could get you tuition funds
January 10, 2020 -- Everyone deserves a second chance at life. It's not just our name. It's our mission. Our nation's veterans understand. They go around the world helping people who face a humanitarian crisis. But when their service is over, they often struggle to come to terms with what they witnessed. Consider the following [Source]:
- 8.55 out of 1,000 veterans are incarcerated.
- 64% of veterans were sentenced for violent offenses.
- 43% of veterans in prison had four or more prior arrests.
- More than three-quarters (77%) of incarcerated veterans received military discharges that were honorable or under honorable conditions.
- Veterans discharged during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn accounted for 13% of veterans in prison and 25% of veterans in jail.
- 25% of veterans in prison and 31% of veterans in jail reported that they had been in combat while in the military.
- About half of all veterans in prison (48%) and jail (55%) had been told by a mental health professional they had a mental disorder.
- Incarcerated veterans who saw combat (60% in prison and 67% in jail) were more likely than non combat veterans (44% in prison and 49% in jail) to have been told they had a mental disorder.
Our nation's veterans defended freedom around the world. When their duties end, they often have difficulty transitioning back into society. Many will face persistent unemployment, hunger, and homelessness. Many are mentally ill and attempt suicide.
We recognize a major need to help these people successfully reintegrate into society. Unfortunately, current laws offer little reentry assistance. We want to help fill this gap.
We want to spread the word about the unseen problems our veterans face. We promote laws and policies that help provide housing, education, and employment to our veterans. We need you to help us spread the word.
